Woman Was Hospitalized After Severe Shark Bite at Sydney’s Coogee Beach

(MENAFN) A woman has suffered serious injuries after being bitten by a shark at a beach in Sydney, according to police.

Authorities in New South Wales reported that emergency crews were dispatched on Saturday morning to Coogee Beach in the eastern part of the city after receiving alerts about the incident.

Police said the 35-year-old woman was “pulled from the water by members of the public who commenced first aid”, and confirmed she sustained “serious arm and leg injuries”.

She was later transported to hospital by helicopter. As a precaution, several nearby beaches were temporarily shut down following the attack.

Eyewitness accounts described a chaotic scene in the water. One witness said they saw a “massive pool of blood” in the ocean, followed by a woman “kind of motioning to swim, lots of splashing, and then a ski paddler was out trying to bring her in”, according to local media reports.

The incident comes shortly after another fatal shark attack in Australia, where a male diver was killed last week after being bitten by a suspected 4.5m (14.8ft) shark off the coast south-east of Perth in Western Australia.
